Programs & Workshops

Griot World offers programs and workshops for children, young adults and adult learners.

Griot World

A griot (pronounced “gree-oh”) or Djelliba (pronounced "D-jelly-ba) is a scholar whose role in society is that of a royal advisor to the chief, a storyteller, historian or a musician.  They are “repositories of the oral tradition.” Our fascinating and unforgettable program was designed to promote cultural development and mutual understanding among young people.  This program is available as a 45-60 minute classroom performance, school assemblies, and as a six-eight week weekly program.  During each session, our griots play musical instruments while telling various genres of stories, fables, epics, narratives, and folktales from around the world.

Workshops/Performance Showcase

Griot World Performance/Showcase is an extension of Griot World.  During this activity, participants are engaged by using effective, varied, and research-based practices to improve their understanding of global history and social studies.  Participants will dress in costume and portray an historical figure, or event; sing or recite poetry, tell a short story, or play a musical instrument to re-enact and/or demonstrate what they have learned during a performance/showcase.

Children & Young Adults

This program offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the fun and exciting world of archaeology. It introduces students to the field of archaeology as they discover how archaeologists study artifacts to understand more about people and cultures from around the world. Students learn how to use basic archaeological tools, survey surface features and interpret archaeological evidence.

Each student receives a certificate as a Young Archaeologist from The Archaeology Laboratory for African and African Diaspora Studies (ALAADS) at Central Connecticut State University.

Adult Learners

The family is where learning begins.  This program is geared for individuals that have limited reading skills or want to improve their reading comprehension and fluency, as they explore the world of archaeology.

Our adult literacy program will vary from one community to another as each program strives to meet the participants’ needs and use the assets of the community.  Thus, our adult literacy programs can take place in libraries, community centers, churches, prisons, and classrooms.
